Senate leaders are currently debating legislation that would lower drug costs by allowing the federal government to negotiate the price of high-cost drugs. But the pharmaceutical industry isn't willing to give up its power to unilaterally set drug prices.

Every month, millions of Americans are faced with the high cost of filling their prescriptions. And too often, even with insurance, they simply don't have enough money to cover those costs. This isn't surprising when you consider that on average, Americans pay two to three times as much as people in other countries for the same medicines.

You have an opportunity to address this problem by supporting legislation to allow Medicare to negotiate for fair prescription drug prices. That will help 62 million Americans enrolled in that program.

And you can triple your impact by extending Medicare negotiated prices to the commercially insured. A recent survey by the West Health Policy Institute and Gallup found that "adults under age 65 are twice as likely as those 65 and over to have been unable to pay for medicine or drugs that a doctor had prescribed because they did not have enough money to pay for them." In fact, younger Americans are twice as likely to skip medications or not fill prescriptions because of costs compared to senior citizens. By allowing people covered by private insurance to benefit from Medicare negotiated prices, you'll help an additional 179 million Americans.

There's a lot at stake in this debate: Negotiated drug prices, along with other measures, could save American consumers over $80 billion each year.

Please support drug pricing legislation that allows broad negotiating power for Medicare drugs and extends those prices to private insurers.
